What is Kanach Yerevan?
Kanach Yerevan is a community-driven movement with the goal of making Yerevan a green and ecologically healthy city. We aim to organize the efforts of volunteers to make sure that the city's green spaces are properly maintained and expanded.
To achieve this, our main focus is on creating systematic change. Our volunteers conduct public inspections of existing trees and new plantings, producing reports to document their condition. We use this data to work directly with municipal authorities, advocating for solutions to existing problems and helping to implement modern, sustainable approaches to tree care. A key part of this is helping to bring citizens back into the feedback loop, ensuring their voices are heard by municipal workers.
We also work to keep citizens informed about the state of green spaces and create educational materials to raise public awareness. While our systemic work is the priority, we sometimes organize hands-on community events, such as planting trees, collecting acorns, or building nesting boxes for birds.
Alongside these efforts, we run a continuous project to map all urban trees, using our own in-house application and the help of volunteers. All the data we collect is shared publicly, allowing anyone, including government workers, to use it to update maintenance routes or schedules.
Our movement started in April 2024, when massive tree cutting in the city center sparked public outrage. Today, the core team is a group of volunteers from many different professional and cultural backgrounds. While not all of us are professional arborists, we are all passionate about trees and willing to learn. We see this diversity as our greatest strength, as it ensures we approach challenges from multiple perspectives and represent a broad, inclusive vision for the city's future.
The project is open to everyone who wants to contribute to the preservation of the city's green heritage. We welcome help from individual volunteers and are always open to collaboration with other community movements and businesses. We have a lot to do, and we need your help. If you are willing to participate or collaborate, please contact us.
