Planting acorns in wastelands
On November 9 and 16, a small team of Kanach Yerevan members started an experiment in partisan reforestation, by planting acorns directly into the soil on abandoned locations, using the squirrel method. We want to see if there is enough rain during fall and winter in Yerevan for the acorns to germinate, and if they would be strong enough to survive the first year without extensive care.
We collected acorns in city parks, so it must be the English oak (Quercus robur) with occasional Caucasian oak (Quercus macranthera). We know that for best results we need the Caucasian oak mostly. But the goal of the experiment is to give a regular city resident a quick and easy way of greening wastelands autonomously. Finding Caucasian oaks in Yerevan is, unfortunately, quite challenging.
We don't publish the locations so they don't get disturbed. Next year, we will be reviewing the progress and publishing it.
Stay tuned.
