Attracting Tits to Yerevan's Parks

Translation: Русский English

This year, we launched a pilot project to attract tits to Yerevan’s parks.

Tits are true pest-destroying machines. They are one of the most effective natural solutions to the problem of the leaf-mining moth, which massively infests Yerevan's oaks every year.

There are tits in the city, but their population is severely limited by a "housing shortage." They nest in tree hollows, but in an urban environment, old trees with hollows are usually removed to ensure the safety of passersby. As a result, the birds simply have nowhere to raise their young. We can help them by installing nesting boxes—artificial nesting sites that mimic natural hollows and are protected from predators.

We outlined the oak problem and the solution offered by the birds, discussed the project with the City Landscaping Department (Kanachapatum), and received permission to install a pilot batch of 15 nesting boxes in two parks in Arabkir. We assembled the boxes with the help of volunteers at the Green Green eco-center and mounted them ourselves, carefully securing them to the tree trunks without using a single nail.

Our nesting boxes are marked with "myga.am". We will monitor them throughout the year, collecting data on occupancy rates. Later, we will analyze the results and determine how to scale this project across the entire city.

If you have private property with trees, you can hang a nesting box too! Be sure to read our guide: it explains how to properly build a box, where to hang it, and how to maintain it to ensure the birds remain safe.

Our ultimate goal is to restore the ecological balance and increase the tit population so that they can independently suppress pest outbreaks without chemicals or constant human intervention.

Let's make Yerevan green again!
