Green Space Review: Tumanyan str.
In July 2025, Kanach Yerevan surveyed 360 trees along Tumanyan Street. While 95% of the population is currently classified as healthy, this is primarily due to the recent mass replacement of mature vegetation with young Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) saplings. This renovation has inadvertently lowered the street's canopy layer; by replacing large, first-tier shade trees (like Elms and Ash) with smaller, second-tier ornamental trees, the street has lost significant biomass and cooling capacity for the roadway.
The report highlights a critical strategic error: the substitution of one monoculture for another. With Eastern Redbuds now constituting 75% of all plantings, the street remains highly vulnerable to species-specific pests and diseases. To improve ecological resilience, we recommend diversifying future plantings with drought-tolerant first-tier species (such as Celtis australis or Styphnolobium japonicum) to restore shade coverage, and implementing a rehabilitation program for the remaining mature Elms that have suffered from improper topping.
