Modern Planting and Care Standards
What is it? This initiative marks a shift from aggressive cutting to scientific canopy management. Instead of removing leaning trees or severing their tops, this approach uses precision pruning and structural support systems—such as cabling and bracing—to preserve a tree's natural form while ensuring public safety. It treats the tree as a long-term asset, not a temporary fixture.
Why it matters for Yerevan. In our semi-arid climate, the prevalent practice of "topping" (cutting off tree crowns) is disastrous. It exposes the remaining wood to intense sunscald and aggressive fungal decay, slowly killing the tree from the inside out. Furthermore, simply cutting down inclined trees robs our dusty streets of mature shade when we need it most. Yerevan cannot afford to lose established canopy to outdated techniques that treat living urban infrastructure like firewood.
The Standard. We advocate for the strict adoption of European-aligned pruning protocols. These international best practices explicitly prohibit indiscriminate topping. Instead, they mandate scientific "crown cleaning" and the use of dynamic support systems to stabilize leaning trees rather than removing them. By implementing these codified methods, we ensure that every mature tree is retained to cool our city and filter our air.
Current Status. There is no known plant care standard. The only known official document declares that decisions are made based on the opinion of the chief dendrologist. This is an open door for all kinds of errors and corruption.
