Leaf Composting

What is it? Instead of discarding fallen leaves as waste, this process collects and transports them to a specialized facility. There, the controlled heat generated by natural decomposition transforms the organic material into nutrient-rich compost. This "black gold" is then used to amend and revitalize urban soil.

Why it matters for Yerevan. Yerevan’s dusty soil often lacks organic matter and struggles to retain moisture. Adding compost acts like a sponge, saving water and cooling tree roots during our scorching, dry summers. Crucially, professional "hot composting" kills harmful pests and larvae often found in our local leaf litter, turning a biological hazard into a vital resource.

The Standard. Municipal teams must collect autumn leaves for processing at a central facility rather than dumping or burning them. The procedure must follow scientifically proven methods to generate high heat, ensuring the sterilization of pathogens and weed seeds. The resulting clean compost must be returned to city parks to naturally regenerate the soil ecosystem.

Current Status. Currently, leaves are either left in parks where they act as pest reservoirs or are removed without a strategic plan. While a composting facility was previously installed on Green Department land, it currently sits abandoned. We advocate for immediately restarting and expanding this facility to process all of Yerevan's organic waste.
