Public Tree Inventory

What is it? A Digital Inventory is a comprehensive, publicly accessible electronic map that catalogs every single tree in the city. It serves as a transparent "smart city" database, providing vital details on each tree’s species, age, health status, and maintenance history, utilizing modern professional tracking systems found in leading green capitals.

Why it matters for Yerevan? In our challenging semi-arid climate, efficient resource management is non-negotiable. Currently, without precise data, it is difficult to optimize irrigation during our scorching, dry summers or determine which species truly thrive in our dusty, alkaline soil. A lack of visibility also prevents residents from understanding how they can assist in caring for the trees in their own courtyards, leaving our green cover vulnerable to avoidable decline.

The Standard. We call for the implementation of an open-access map—potentially utilizing established third-party platforms—where the municipality provides continuous, up-to-date data. This ensures scientific management of our urban forest, allows citizens to actively monitor tree care, and guarantees that every maintenance decision maximizes the essential shade and cooling capacity of our city.

Current Status. The media reports each year that an electronic tree inventory is being developed, but we have yet to see it. Meanwhile, there is an open source community-driven alternative, called Trees of Yerevan.
