Meadow (mixed) Lawns
What is it? Unlike monoculture turf, a meadow lawn combines native grasses and wildflowers. This natural carpet requires significantly less mowing and water. It mimics nature, creating a resilient, living groundcover rather than a resource-intensive artificial surface.
Why it matters for Yerevan Our city battles constant dust. Meadow lawns cover naked earth, trapping particles and retaining soil moisture far better than bare patches. Furthermore, the plant variety attracts beneficial insects that naturally control pests, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that withstands our intense summer heat.
The Standard Bare soil must be eliminated to stop dust pollution. Monoculture turf should be reserved strictly for recreational zones. Elsewhere, landscaping must prioritize mixed species planting. These areas should be managed to encourage biodiversity, utilizing deep-rooting plants that thrive without constant chemical intervention.
Current Status Currently, the vast majority of public land is bare, dusty soil. Paradoxically, crews actively weed these areas, removing the scarce wild grass that serves as natural cover. However, a single-digit number of meadow lawns do exist in Yerevan. These successful sites act as proof of concept that this sustainable model works.
