Mycorrhizal Inoculation
What is it? This practice introduces specialized beneficial fungi that bond with tree roots. Acting as a "secondary root system," they vastly expand a tree's reach. This microscopic network absorbs water and nutrients from deep within the soil that standard roots simply cannot access on their own.
Why it matters for Yerevan. In Yerevan’s climate, soil moisture is precious. Mycorrhizae act as a survival mechanism, allowing trees to drink from the driest soil pores. This biological boost is critical for nutrient uptake in our specific soil conditions, ensuring trees establish quickly to provide the dense shade necessary to cool our streets.
The Standard. Planting specifications must require root inoculation with verified fungal spores. Since many tree species cannot survive without this partnership, it must be a mandatory step during planting. This ensures long-term resilience against environmental stress, protecting the city's investment in new greenery.
Current Status. While irrigation infrastructure is improving, we observe no biological soil support. Trees are watered but never inoculated. Without these essential fungi, new trees remain vulnerable. We advocate for making mycorrhizal treatment a non-negotiable standard for every new tree planted in the city.
