Pocket Forests
What is it? Pocket forests are ultra-compact green zones planted to mimic natural forest growth. By clustering native saplings densely, they grow significantly faster than conventional planting. This method turns small, unused urban corners into lush, functional habitats.
Why it matters for Yerevan. In Yerevan, finding space for large parks is difficult. These forests matter because they act as essential ecosystem reservoirs, preserving biodiversity in the heart of the city where space is tight. They effectively trap dust, provide deep shade, and cool the surrounding concrete during our intense summers.
The Standard. The standard mandates a multi-layered planting approach: shrubs, sub-trees, and canopy trees must be planted simultaneously to maximize density. Projects must use exclusively native species and ensure the forest becomes entirely self-sustaining—requiring no watering or maintenance—within three years of establishment.
Current Status. Kanach Yerevan presented this method to the Greening Department, but the proposal faced skepticism. We are currently seeking partners to donate land and resources for pilot projects. These experiments are crucial to demonstrate that high-density forestry is a practical solution for Yerevan.
