Updated Valuation Methodology

What is it? Tree valuation calculates the true monetary worth of a living tree. Instead of viewing a tree merely as potential lumber, this method accounts for the specific "ecosystem services" it provides—such as cooling the air, filtering dust, and managing stormwater—along with its full replacement cost and aesthetic value.

The Standard. We advocate for scientifically proven methods where fines reflect the full cost of the loss. If a mature tree is damaged or killed, the responsible party must pay for its complete ecological and economic impact, plus the cost of planting and caring for a replacement until it reaches maturity.

Current Status. Currently, penalties for damaging trees in Yerevan are negligible—often costing less than the price of firewood. Consequently, construction projects frequently sever critical root systems or damage trunks without fear of repercussion. Police enforcement is minimal due to these low stakes. We are pushing to adopt rigorous international valuation standards and strict enforcement to protect our urban forest.
